Individual KALLAX units are straightforward. Large combinations - 2×4, 4×4 - are not. The back panel is the critical step. If it doesn't lie flat, the whole unit racks under load. Doors no longer close flush, inserts jam.
We assemble KALLAX shelving in Vienna every day and know where it gets difficult: the back panel must lie fully against every edge before it's stapled. For large combinations, we laser-align the carcass so all squares are even and the structure stands flat.
Which KALLAX configurations we assemble
All KALLAX sizes and configurations: 1×4 bookcase, 2×2 and 2×4 combinations, the large 4×4 system as a room divider or wall unit. All inserts too: KALLAX inserts with doors, drawers, baskets and flaps.
When KALLAX is used as a freestanding room divider, we secure it to the wall or ceiling depending on the room. A freestanding 4×4 KALLAX without anchoring is not an acceptable risk in a home with children.
Assembly on uneven floors
In Vienna's Altbau apartments, floors often deviate 1 to 2 centimetres. A KALLAX placed without compensation on an uneven floor pulls sideways. The squares sit crooked and doors and inserts don't run cleanly. We compensate for floor deviations before assembly begins.
Why the back panel is the critical step
The KALLAX back panel is thin fibreboard and gives the unit its structural rigidity. If it doesn't lie fully flat - for example because the carcass was slightly racked when stapling - the unit pulls crooked under load. For a 4×4 KALLAX used as a room divider loaded with books and objects, this becomes a real problem.
We laser-align the carcass before fixing the back panel and check all four corners. The back panel is then stapled evenly, not just at the edges. It sounds like a small detail but it determines whether the unit still stands straight a year later.
With large KALLAX combinations, never fix individual back panels before all units are connected and aligned with each other.
