Why poorly assembled furniture is a real problem
In Vienna's Altbau apartments, floors are rarely level. A wardrobe assembled without proper alignment twists in the frame. Doors drag, hinges wear out early, drawers stick. We compensate for floor deviations before assembly begins, using a laser and calibrated furniture shims. This isn't a detail - it determines how long the furniture lasts.
With PAX, the thin back panel is the structural backbone. We measure both diagonals before fixing it. With BESTÅ, every door and push-opener is individually adjusted after assembly. Every furniture type has its critical step, and we know it.
Uneven Floors in Vienna's Altbau Apartments
In many Vienna apartments, floors deviate 2 to 3 centimetres per metre. A large wardrobe assembled on this surface without compensation twists in the frame. Doors drag, hinges wear out early, drawers don't run cleanly.
We measure the floor deviation with a laser level and compensate with calibrated shims before the first panel goes up. This is the step IKEA's instructions don't cover, but it determines whether your wardrobe lasts years or develops problems within months.
A wardrobe that looks straight to the eye can still be off by several millimetres - enough to wear out hinges within a year. Our laser catches what the eye cannot.
Wall Anchoring: Scanner Before Every Drill
A fully loaded PAX wardrobe weighs over 100 kg. Without wall anchoring it's a tipping hazard, especially in homes with children. We scan every wall with a line detector before drilling to locate cables and pipes.
Then we choose the right anchor: standard plugs for Altbau brick, hollow-wall anchors for Rigips, concrete anchors for reinforced walls. In Vienna's older buildings, cables often run in unexpected locations - wall scanning before every drill is non-negotiable.
Why professional assembly makes the difference
Torque-controlled drilling
A stripped screw hole in particleboard cannot be repaired. Once the wood fibres are destroyed, the connection fails permanently.
Diagonal measurement before the back panel
This single measurement determines whether your wardrobe stands stable for 10 years or starts wobbling within months.
Wall type identification in Vienna
The wrong anchor for your wall type means the fixing doesn't hold. We identify the wall with a scanner and choose the right fastener every time.
DIY vs. Professional Assembly
| Factor | DIY Assembly | Professional Assembly |
|---|---|---|
| Uneven floor | Frame twists, doors drag | Laser-leveled before assembly |
| Torque | Over-tightened with hex key, particleboard splits | Calibrated setting, connection holds |
| Back panel | Fixed by eye, frame often not square | Both diagonals measured and equal |
| Wall anchoring | Often skipped, tip hazard | Scanner-verified, correct anchor |
| Time (PAX 2-door) | 3 to 4 hours | 90 to 120 minutes |
| Packaging | Stays with you | Taken away |
Leveling, diagonal measurement, torque, wall anchoring - invisible in the finished result, but they determine whether the furniture lasts 1 year or 10.
