A loft bed carries a child's weight at 1.5 to 2 metres above the floor. Every bolt connection must hold. If a connection isn't fully tightened during assembly and works loose over time, there is no advance warning. Assembling a loft bed is not a typical furniture job - it is a safety job.
We assemble loft beds in Vienna regularly and follow the same protocol every time: check all connections with a torque wrench, test safety rails for correct seating and load resistance, set wall anchoring. Only then is the bed handed over.
Which models we assemble

Wall anchoring is not optional
A freestanding loft bed can tip. With a 180 cm high loft bed, a child on top and a child using the ladder, lateral forces occur. Austrian standard EN 747 for children's loft beds requires stability against tipping. The safest approach is wall anchoring. We fit it as standard on every loft bed, regardless of whether the manufacturer describes it as optional.
Why a load test after assembly is non-negotiable
After assembling a loft bed, we run a basic load test: we load the bed from above and check whether all connections hold. We also test the safety rail under load in the direction of a fall - that's the direction that matters in an emergency.
This test takes five minutes. It is the only way to find an incompletely tightened connection before the child sleeps in the bed. We do it on every loft bed, without exception.
On IKEA SVÄRTA and MYDAL, pay close attention to the diagonal braces: they must be fully engaged before the crossbars and slats are fitted. The assembly instructions are ambiguous on this point.
