Sliding doors are technically more demanding than hinged doors. The critical element is the parallelism of the top and bottom tracks. If the tracks aren't exactly parallel, the door drifts when opening and closing - either toward the wall or forward. With two-track systems, the distance between the tracks also needs to be correct so doors don't touch and block each other.
In Vienna's Altbau apartments two more factors apply: floors are rarely level, and ceilings even less so. The top track must still be mounted exactly horizontal - not parallel to the ceiling. This requires measuring height differences from point to point along the ceiling and compensating during installation.

What goes wrong with sliding doors
The most common problem after poor installation: doors that jump off the bottom track after a few weeks. This happens when doors aren't correctly seated in the guides during assembly, or when the distance between top and bottom track is too large. The second most common problem: doors that won't close fully because the track isn't level. Both are avoidable during assembly.
Why track parallelism determines everything
Sliding doors work through two opposing forces: gravity pulls the door down, the guides keep it in the track. If the top and bottom tracks aren't exactly parallel, one of these forces wins. The door drifts toward the lower side of the track and can no longer close fully.
On a 240 cm wide sliding door wardrobe with 3 tracks, a 2 mm deviation across the width can cause the outermost door to drift by almost 5 mm. That sounds minor, but it's enough for the door to no longer close flush with the frame. We measure top and bottom tracks with a laser and adjust until parallelism is achieved.
With PAX and sliding doors, always build and level the wardrobe carcass first before mounting the sliding door frame. Mounting the frame on a crooked carcass transfers the deviation.

Yes. IKEA PAX wardrobes can be equipped with the sliding door frame (PAXHOLM) after the fact if the wardrobe has the right dimensions. Please provide wardrobe width and height when enquiring.
