For shelves under high load, such as tool shelves, wine racks or fully loaded bookshelves, we use heavy-duty anchors and calculate the load before mounting. In Altbau brick, we use Fischer or Hilti heavy-duty anchors that grip mechanically in the masonry and hold long-term even when fully loaded.
Shelf Mounting in Vienna's Altbau: Why the Anchor Matters
In Altbau apartments, the masonry is often soft brick with thick plaster. A standard hardware-store plug spins in this material over time and eventually fails to hold a loaded shelf. We use heavy-duty expansion anchors for Altbau brick that grip mechanically in the masonry.
Before every drill hole we scan the wall with a multi-sensor detector. This identifies electrical cables, water pipes and wooden beams, which in Vienna's older buildings often don't follow today's standard routing patterns.
In Altbau apartments with wooden joist ceilings, cables sometimes run diagonally behind the plaster. A scanner shows this before the hole is drilled.

Overloaded Shelves: the Underestimated Risk
A shelf mounted with the wrong plugs can pull out of the wall under full load. The risk is particularly high in Altbau brick when standard plugs are used instead of heavy-duty anchors. We size every mounting for the actual expected load.

How much weight can a shelf hold on a drywall wall?
With hollow-wall anchors, shelves on drywall typically hold 15 to 25 kg per fixing point. For heavier loads, we anchor directly into the metal studs behind the board, where 40 to 60 kg per point is achievable. We check before mounting and give you an honest assessment of what your wall can hold.
How many brackets do I need for my floating shelf?
As a rule of thumb: two brackets for shelves up to 80 cm, then one additional bracket every 40 to 60 cm. For heavy loads or long solid wood shelves, more fixing points are recommended. We calculate this on site.
Do I need to provide fixings and plugs?
No. We bring a complete kit of professional fixings for all wall types: nylon plugs, Fischer Duopower, heavy-duty anchors for brick, hollow-wall anchors for drywall, and concrete anchors. You don't need to buy anything.
Can I have several shelves mounted in one visit?
Yes, and that is the most efficient option. Whether three shelves in the living room or a complete shelving system in a home office: we handle everything in one visit. For larger jobs we give a package price.
