IKEA beds look like a straightforward hour of assembly. In practice there are two common failure points: slat bases fitted with uneven tension, and MALM drawers that start binding or rattling after a few weeks. Both originate during assembly and both can be avoided during assembly.
The slat base is the most common weak point. If the centre rail isn't properly seated or tension is distributed unevenly across the slats, the mattress begins to sag within months. You feel it before you see it. We tension the slat base evenly across all slats and check the centre rail before the mattress goes on.
Which models we assemble
All current IKEA bed frames: MALM in all configurations (with 2, 4 and 6 drawers), HEMNES, BRIMNES, TARVA, SONGESAND, SLAKT and NEIDEN. Plus the matching LURÖY and LÖNSET slat bases in all sizes - single (90x200), double (140x200, 160x200) and king (180x200).
HEMNES is a special case: it's solid wood and heavy. The headboard alone weighs significantly more than a typical flatpack bed. Assembly is a two-person job. We come prepared.
MALM drawers - why the runners need to be right
MALM with drawers has plastic runners under the frame on which the drawer bodies slide. If these runners aren't positioned precisely during assembly, the drawers run crooked and over time start to bind or rattle when opening. We position all runners to measurement and test each drawer before we're done.
Why slat base tension has to be set correctly during assembly
The LURÖY slat base has a centre rail that prevents the slats from sagging in the middle. If this centre rail sits too loosely or tension is unevenly distributed across the slats, one area gives more under body weight. The mattress takes on that shape within months and loses its support.
Then there's the squeaking: if slat ends aren't fully seated in their holders, they rub under load. This is audible at night and can't be fixed from the outside without removing and re-laying the entire slat base. We tension it correctly on first assembly so neither problem occurs.
On IKEA beds with the LÖNSET slat base (the premium model), check the centre support legs: they must rest on the floor, not hang in the air. IKEA's assembly instructions give little guidance on this.
