Wired models like Ring Pro or Nest Doorbell (Wired) use the existing doorbell cable. In most cases, the low-voltage supply from the existing doorbell transformer is sufficient. We check this before installation so there are no surprises.
Bticino MyHome and similar bus systems found in newer Viennese apartment buildings require compatible video intercoms. We advise on which retrofit option makes sense for your setup.
Smart Lock Installation Vienna: Nuki, Yale Linus and More
Nuki Smart Lock is the most widely used smart lock in Austria, and for good reason: it mounts over the existing cylinder without replacing it. No key handover, no changes to the lock mechanism. For rental apartments, this is the most straightforward solution.
Yale Linus and similar models replace the door cylinder entirely. That gives more control, but requires a compatible cylinder size and, in rental apartments, landlord approval. We check compatibility before installation.
Both systems can be combined with video doorbells: ring the bell, see who it is, open the door via app. That is the complete smart entry setup.
On request, we can also set up smart lighting at the same appointment — for example Philips Hue bulbs or Shelly smart switches. This allows the entrance area to light up automatically on movement.
Wired vs. Battery Video Doorbell: The Right Choice for Vienna Apartments
Vienna's Altbau buildings often have old 2-wire intercom systems originally designed for analogue audio-only intercoms. These systems typically supply 8 to 24V AC, which is sufficient for wired smart doorbells like Ring Pro. But the voltage and transformer must be right. We test this before installation.
For apartments without a compatible doorbell cable or with uncertain voltage output, battery-powered models are the cleaner option. Battery life runs 6 to 12 months depending on usage. For renters, the key advantage is zero structural changes, no holes in the intercom panel, no mains wiring touched, and no landlord conversation required.
In older Altbau buildings, ageing doorbell transformers sometimes supply unstable voltage, causing Wi-Fi doorbells to disconnect repeatedly. Replacing the transformer is a small job that solves the problem cleanly.

Can I install a video doorbell in a rented apartment?▾
Battery-powered doorbells like the Ring Video Doorbell (cable-free) are fine in almost all rental situations, as no structural changes are needed. For wired models that use the existing doorbell system, a quick check with your landlord is advisable. We advise on which option suits your situation on site.
Do I need an electrician for a video doorbell?▾
Not for battery-powered models. Not for wired models using the existing low-voltage doorbell cable either. A licensed electrician is only needed if new 230V mains wiring needs to be laid. That is rarely necessary for retrofits.
Does Nuki Smart Lock work on every apartment door?▾
Nuki works with most standard Austrian locks that have a round interior knob. There is a compatibility list on the Nuki website. We check compatibility with your specific lock before installation and bring the right adapter model if needed.
Do I have to hand in my key when I get a smart lock?▾
No, at least not with Nuki and similar clip-on solutions. The lock remains fully functional mechanically and your physical key stays valid. The smart lock is fitted on top and adds app control and temporary access codes.
What happens if the smart lock battery runs out?▾
Nuki and most smart locks show the battery level in the app and give advance warning. In an emergency, the lock still works mechanically with the normal key. You cannot get locked out.
Can I combine a video doorbell and a smart lock?▾
Yes, and it is the most useful combination. Ring Video Doorbell works directly with Ring Intercom. Nuki connects with various doorbells. We set up the connection between both systems during the appointment.
How long does installation take?▾
A battery-powered video doorbell is installed and set up in 30 to 45 minutes. A smart lock like Nuki takes 20 to 40 minutes. Installing both together takes 60 to 75 minutes.
