Wardrobes look straight after assembly. The problems appear later: doors that don't close properly, drawers that bind, or a wardrobe that leans slightly against the wall after a few months. The cause is almost always the assembly, either the floor was not compensated adequately or the wardrobe was not anchored.
In Vienna's Altbau apartments, floors often deviate 1 to 3 centimetres. Wardrobes without adjustable feet (which describes many brands outside the IKEA range) cannot simply be placed down. We compensate for floor deviations with furniture shims before the wardrobe is set, then anchor it to the wall.
Which brands we assemble

Mirror door wardrobes are a frequent special case: mirror doors are heavier than standard fronts. Hinges designed for the weight of standard chipboard do not hold reliably long-term. We check the fittings and set them so doors still hang cleanly after years of use.
Soft-close and other fittings
Soft-close hinges and push-to-open fittings only work reliably if set correctly during assembly. Most manufacturers supply these fittings pre-adjusted to a middle setting. That setting rarely suits the actual door thickness and weight. We calibrate all fittings after installation.
Sliding Door Wardrobe Assembly Vienna
The biggest challenge with sliding door wardrobes is keeping the top and bottom tracks parallel. If the two rails deviate by even a few millimetres, doors run stiffly or jump out of the channel when opened. In Altbau apartments with dropped or uneven ceilings, this is hard to achieve accurately without a laser level.
We align both tracks with the laser, adjust the soft-close setting after the doors are hung, and check the movement of every door. This applies to all systems: IKEA PAX PAXHOLM and AULI, Hettich, Häfele and all other sliding door systems.
Wardrobes without adjustable feet on Altbau floors
IKEA PAX has adjustable feet that compensate for floor deviations of up to 2 cm. Many other brands do not. With a Rauch or Nolte wardrobe, the carcass sits directly on the floor. If the floor is uneven, the wardrobe stands crooked and pulls further over time. Doors no longer close flush, drawers no longer run cleanly.
The solution is shimming before assembly, not after. Shimming under an already-assembled wardrobe is possible but less precise. We measure the floor deviation first and set the shims before the wardrobe is placed.
For wardrobes without adjustable feet, always measure the floor deviation at the exact planned position, not somewhere else in the room. Altbau floors often vary significantly over short distances.
