What's included

  • Laser alignment on every wardrobe — doors close flush and smooth, even on sloping Altbau floors.
  • Diagonal measurement of every carcass — no twisted frames, no sticking or misaligned doors.
  • Wardrobe professionally anchored to the wall — tip-safe even when fully loaded.
  • Packaging removed and disposed of. Your home stays clean after every visit.

IKEA PAX Assembly in Vienna: What IKEA's Instructions Don't Cover

IKEA's assembly guide assumes a flat floor, straight walls, and unlimited space. Vienna's Altbau apartments rarely deliver any of these. Floors in Gründerzeit buildings slope 1–3 cm across a wardrobe's width. Walls lean. Stairwells are narrow enough to make a 200 cm PAX panel a two-person puzzle. We assemble IKEA PAX wardrobes in Vienna daily — with the tools and techniques the instruction booklet skips.

The difference between a professionally assembled PAX and a DIY result is visible the first time you close a door. A wardrobe that is not leveled precisely — using a spirit level and adjustable feet on every unit — will have doors that sit crooked, slide open on their own, or jam at the bottom. The fix is alignment during assembly, not adjustment afterward.

KALLAX, BESTÅ, BILLY and Other IKEA Systems

We assemble the full range of IKEA storage furniture, not only PAX. KALLAX shelving units are straightforward but require precise back panel fitting and careful handling to avoid bowing. BESTÅ combinations involve many small components that need consistent alignment across all units. BILLY bookcases need correct back panel positioning and proper wall anchoring so the unit stays vertical under load. HEMNES and BRIMNES dressers have drawer alignment that requires patience and the right technique on the runners.

For all IKEA models: we bring our own tools including a calibrated torque screwdriver, spirit level, laser measure, and diagonal measuring tape. We do not use the IKEA hex key beyond the first pass — over-tightening with it strips cam lock nuts in particleboard, which is how furniture starts to wobble within months.

Uneven Floors in Vienna Altbau: The Most Common PAX Problem

Most Viennese Altbau apartments were built between 1880 and 1910. Floor levels are not flat. A typical floor slopes 1–2 cm across a 200 cm wardrobe bay, and sometimes more. IKEA provides adjustable feet on PAX units specifically for this reason — but the correct use of those feet is more involved than turning them by hand.

The process: set all feet to their lowest position first. Place the assembled carcass in position. Measure with a spirit level across the top in both directions. Adjust the front feet and rear feet independently until the unit is plumb in both planes. Lock the feet. Only then hang doors and fit interior fittings. Done in this order, a PAX on an uneven floor will have perfectly flush doors and smooth operation for years.

Wall Anchoring: Why It Matters for IKEA Wardrobes

IKEA requires PAX wardrobes to be anchored to the wall, and for good reason: a fully loaded wardrobe weighs 80–120 kg and has a high center of gravity. An unanchored wardrobe tips when a child climbs a drawer or a door is opened with force. In Vienna's Altbau apartments, the wall behind a PAX is usually solid brick — heavy-duty masonry anchors provide a permanent and reliable fix. In rooms with Rigips (drywall) partitions, we use cavity anchors rated for the full wardrobe load, not standard plastic plugs.

PAX in Vienna Altbau: Uneven Floors, Solved

The single most common problem with DIY IKEA PAX assembly in Vienna is an unlevel wardrobe. The building's floor is not flat — the wardrobe is adjusted to look vertical by eye — the doors are hung — and three months later the doors are drifting open or sticking at the bottom. The fix at that point requires unloading the wardrobe, removing the doors, adjusting the feet, rehinging, and refitting everything.

The professional approach: spirit level before everything else. We check the floor slope in both planes before the carcass is even fully tightened. Adjustable leveling feet are set precisely — front and rear independently — until the unit reads plumb. Only then are internal fittings added and doors hung. A PAX assembled this way on a 2 cm floor slope will have doors that close with one finger and stay closed.

Never hang PAX doors before leveling the carcass. The door hinges have limited lateral adjustment — they cannot compensate for a wardrobe that leans 1 cm. Level the frame first, then hang.

What IKEA Instructions Assume (And What Vienna Apartments Don't Have)

IKEA's PAX assembly instructions are written for ideal conditions: flat floor, 2.4 m ceiling height, wide open space for laying out panels, two people. Vienna's Altbau apartments often have 3.2 m ceilings (which makes tall PAX panels awkward to maneuver), sloping floors (solved by leveling feet, correctly used), narrow hallways (panels must be carried through at an angle), and walls that are not plumb (which affects ceiling height trim strips).

The ceiling trim strip on a PAX is designed to close the gap between the wardrobe top and the ceiling. In a room with a 3.2 m ceiling and an uneven floor, one end of the gap is larger than the other. Cutting the trim strip at an angle to match the actual ceiling line is a finishing step that requires measuring and a mitre cut — it is not mentioned in any IKEA instruction. We do this as standard. The result looks intentional, not patched.

If you have a room with a Deckenstuck (ornamental cornice), measure the ceiling height at the exact position of each wardrobe unit before ordering PAX. The cornice adds to the effective ceiling height at the edges, and the PAX may not fit without removing or cutting around the cornice detail.

IKEA PAX: DIY vs. Professional Assembly

FactorDIY AssemblyProfessional Assembly
Time (3-door unit)3–5 hours (first time)90–120 minutes
Tools requiredIKEA hex key only (insufficient)Torque screwdriver, laser level, spirit level, diagonal tape
Uneven floor resultDoors drift or stick within monthsLeveling feet set precisely, doors flush permanently
Wall anchoringOften skipped or done incorrectlyStandard — correct anchor for your wall type
Packaging disposalRemains with youRemoved and disposed of
Risk of stripped hardwareHigh (over-tightening with hex key)Zero (calibrated torque)

A professional assembly takes less time than a careful DIY attempt and produces a result that lasts. For a wardrobe you will use every day for years, the difference is worth it.

Important Safety Notes

Unanchored Wardrobes Are a Tip Hazard

IKEA requires wall anchoring for all PAX wardrobes. An unanchored 250 cm wardrobe weighing 100 kg can tip if a door is pulled or a child climbs a shelf. We anchor every wardrobe to the wall as standard — with the correct anchor for your wall type.

Over-Tightening Strips Cam Lock Nuts

The IKEA hex key applies no torque limit. Tightening cam lock nuts past the point of resistance splits the surrounding particleboard, causing the joint to loosen within months. We use a calibrated torque screwdriver to tighten every connection to the correct setting.

FAQs

  • How long does IKEA PAX assembly take?

A single 3-door PAX (200 cm wide) typically takes 90 to 120 minutes including leveling and wall anchoring. A full walk-in combination with 6 or more units takes half a day. We give a time estimate with every fixed-price quote.

  • Can PAX be assembled on uneven floors?

Yes. Every PAX unit has adjustable leveling feet designed for this. The key is using a spirit level to bring the carcass plumb in both directions before hanging doors. We do this as standard — it is the difference between doors that close cleanly and doors that swing open or stick.

  • What does IKEA PAX assembly cost in Vienna?

A single PAX unit (2 doors, standard height) starts from €89. A 3-unit PAX combination (6 doors) starts from €169. KALLAX 4x4 starts from €99. All prices are fixed upfront — no hourly billing. Send a photo and the model name and we will confirm the exact price.

  • Do you assemble IKEA furniture other than PAX?

Yes — KALLAX, BESTÅ, BILLY, MALM, HEMNES, BRIMNES and other IKEA models. If you have multiple pieces, we work through them in one visit. Send us the list and we will price the full job.

  • Can a PAX wardrobe tip over?

An unanchored PAX can tip, especially under load or if a child pulls on a door. IKEA requires wall anchoring in their assembly instructions. We anchor every PAX to the wall as standard — in solid brick with masonry anchors, in drywall with cavity anchors rated for the wardrobe weight.

  • What if parts are missing or damaged from the IKEA box?

It happens. If we discover missing hardware on-site, we note it and contact you to arrange IKEA replacement parts. For minor missing pieces (cam locks, dowels), we often have standard spares with us. We do not charge extra for time spent on IKEA packaging errors.

  • Can you anchor a PAX into Altbau brick walls?

Yes. Solid brick is the most reliable material for anchoring. We use heavy-duty masonry expansion anchors rated for the full wardrobe load. We scan the wall before drilling to avoid hidden pipes or conduits.

  • Do I need to be home during assembly?

Yes, we ask that you are present at the start to confirm the layout, and at the end to check the result. You do not need to supervise throughout — we work independently once the plan is confirmed.
