The basket is full. A PAX with two frames, a bed, a chest of drawers. Around €1,200. Then IKEA asks: "Add assembly?" And you wonder: how much does that actually cost?
The honest answer: you only see the exact price at the very end. There's no price list per item.
Here are all the prices IKEA Austria publishes (as of October 2026). Also: what a handyman in Vienna charges, and why a PAX costs so much more than a shelf.
How much does assembly cost at IKEA Austria?
IKEA charges a €99 base fee per order for furniture assembly. On top of that comes a price for each item.
According to IKEA Austria, the €99 covers travel, tools, small parts and taking away the packaging. The price per item depends on the effort. You see it in the basket or from customer service.
What IKEA publishes:
| IKEA service | Price |
|---|---|
| Furniture assembly, base fee | €99 per order, plus a price per item |
| Kitchen installation, METOD | €99 per cabinet |
| Kitchen installation, ENHET or KNOXHULT | €79 per cabinet |
| Bathroom installation | €149 per bathroom |
| Connecting an appliance (without kitchen installation) | from €49 per appliance, only with delivery |
There's also a second route. IKEA works with the platform MyHammer. You post the job, and tradespeople send you offers. You agree the price directly with them.
How much do delivery and assembly cost together?
You pay for delivery and assembly separately. Large furniture comes by freight, and the price depends on the order value.
This is what standard freight delivery costs (Monday to Friday), according to IKEA Austria:
| Order value | Delivery | with IKEA Family |
|---|---|---|
| up to €149.99 | €39 | €29 |
| €150 to €499.99 | €49 | €39 |
| €500 to €999.99 | €99 | €79 |
| €1,000 to €1,499.99 | €149 | €129 |
| €1,500 and more | €249 | €199 |
Delivery goes into the room of your choice. Express (within 48 hours) costs €20 more, Saturday €10 extra.
An example with the basket from above (€1,200):
- Delivery: €149
- Assembly base fee: €99
- Subtotal: €248, and then come the prices for the PAX, the bed and the chest of drawers.
That's not a complaint about IKEA. Delivery and travel cost money with every provider. But know this number before you compare quotes.
How much does it cost to have an IKEA kitchen installed?
At IKEA you pay €99 per METOD cabinet. A cabinet here means the cabinet body without fronts. For ENHET and KNOXHULT it's €79 per cabinet. If you mix both ranges, the METOD price applies.
According to IKEA kitchen installation, a lot is already included:
- assembling the cabinets and fixing them to the wall
- the worktop with cutouts (except stone)
- handles and interior fittings
- the IKEA sink with tap and the IKEA appliances
Extra costs:
- appliances from other brands: cabinet price plus a €79 connection fee per appliance
- freestanding IKEA appliances: the price of one cabinet
- stone, quartz, ceramic or glass worktops: €299 per running metre
- custom solutions: by time spent
An example: a kitchen run with 10 METOD cabinets costs €990 for installation. Each appliance from another brand adds €79.
What IKEA expects from you matters just as much. The old kitchen must be gone. Power and water connections must be finished and accessible, walls and floor prepared. If a connection is missing, you need a plumber or electrician first. That's often the part nobody plans for.
How much does a handyman charge for IKEA furniture in Vienna?
Independent handymen usually charge in one of two ways: by the hour or a fixed price per item.
The Austrian price portal daibau.at gives an average of €40 to €60 per hour for furniture assembly in Austria. For kitchens it lists €180 to €210 per running metre. It doesn't say whether VAT is included. Ask about it with every quote, and about travel costs.
In Vienna we work with fixed prices. These are our current starting prices (as of October 2026):
| Furniture | Our fixed price |
|---|---|
| KALLAX | from €60 |
| MALM or HEMNES bed | from €60 |
| BESTÅ | from €69 |
| Loft bed (KURA, STUVA, VITVAL) | from €89 |
| PAX, one frame with hinged doors | from €119 |
| PAX, 200 cm wide | from €279 |
| PAX sliding doors (per pair) | from €119 |
| PAX interior fittings | from €12 per item |
| METOD kitchen run (up to 2.5 m) | from €399 |
Wall anchoring and taking away the packaging are included. You get the exact price before we start, not after.
Why does a PAX cost so much more than a shelf?
Because the frame is the smallest part of the job. The time goes into the doors and the interior fittings.
A 200 cm wide PAX with hinged doors and normal interior fittings takes us 3 to 4 hours on site. The frames go up fairly quickly. Then come the parts everyone underestimates, us included at the start:
- Drawers and pull-outs. Each drawer is a small piece of furniture of its own. It has to be built, hung and adjusted so it runs straight.
- Shoe racks, trouser hangers and baskets. Small parts, but each needs its rails at the right height.
- Adjusting the doors. Every hinge has three adjustment screws. Getting all the gaps even takes time.
That's why we price interior fittings per item. Two PAX wardrobes can look the same from outside. Depending on what's inside, one still takes twice as long.
If you want to know where PAX assembly goes wrong most often, read our article on common PAX assembly mistakes.
What makes assembly more expensive?
These points almost always raise the price, whoever does the job:
- sliding doors, because the wardrobe has to stand perfectly level for them
- uneven floors and walls, common in Vienna's old buildings (Altbau). Then every frame has to be levelled on its own.
- difficult walls for anchoring, such as crumbly Altbau plaster or plasterboard. More on that in our article on why wall plugs don't hold in old walls.
- taking down old furniture before assembly
- missing parts or layout changes on the day
How to get an exact price
An exact price needs exact information. Send the handyman:
- the list of furniture, ideally the IKEA order confirmation or the basket
- for PAX, the code from the PAX planner, so all interior fittings are visible
- a photo of the wall where the furniture will go
- the floor and whether there's a lift
With that, any serious provider can give you a fixed price. Without it, every price stays an estimate.
Assemble yourself or have it done?
Most people can build a KALLAX, a simple bed or a chest of drawers themselves. You need a cordless screwdriver, some patience and a free afternoon.
Having it done is worth it mainly for:
- PAX combinations with several frames, sliding doors or lots of interior fittings
- loft beds, because they have to stand safely
- kitchens, because the worktop, sink and appliances have to fit exactly
- several pieces at once, when you'd rather spend your weekend on something else

Frequently asked questions
How much does assembly cost at IKEA Austria?
A €99 base fee per order, plus a price per item. You see the price per item in the basket or from customer service. Kitchens cost €99 per METOD cabinet.
Can I book IKEA assembly after buying?
Yes. According to IKEA you can add it later, under your orders on IKEA.at or through customer service. You can book an independent handyman at any time, even after the furniture has been delivered.
What should I prepare before the assembly?
All packages are in the room where the furniture goes. The wall is clear and old furniture is gone. For kitchens, power and water connections must be ready. That way the job can start right away.
Is a fixed price better than an hourly rate?
Usually, for you, yes. With a fixed price you know the cost upfront, even if a wardrobe takes longer. With an hourly rate, you carry the risk. If you pay by the hour, always ask about travel, minimum time and VAT.
In short
- IKEA Austria charges a €99 base fee plus a price per item that you only see in the basket.
- Freight delivery costs another €39 to €249, depending on the order value.
- Kitchens cost €99 per METOD cabinet at IKEA. Connections must be ready beforehand.
- With PAX, the interior fittings decide the time, not the number of frames.
- For a fixed price, send the furniture list, the PAX planner code and a photo of the wall.
